WATERBURY, CT – A teen is a hero today for saving the life of a mother and her three children who were trapped inside a burning vehicle.
Justin Gavin (18) was walking on West Main Street in Waterbury when he saw a car on fire. Justin ran over and was able to get the driver’s door open and helped the mother out. Justin then rushed back into the car and got all three children out, including a one year old who was in a car seat.
“Life is too short, so I just thought if that was me in that situation, I would want someone to help me so I definitely did what I can do,” Justin said.
The mother of the vehicle credits Justin with saving all of their lives.
Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo recognized Justin’s heroic actions and presented him with a police department challenge coin.
“The police chief told me whenever I feel like I need some courage or some type of way like brave or something like that always just look back at the coin and think of that day,” Justin said.
Well Justin, we think you have a lot of courage and are very brave. Your friends and family should be very proud of you.
Thank you for your service. You are a true hero.
