Deputy killed while investigating a traffic crash

A Franklin County deputy sheriff was killed on Sunday after being struck by another vehicle as he was investigating a single vehicle crash.

FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA – Franklin County Deputy Sheriff Bill Garner was struck and killed on Sunday while investigating a single vehicle traffic crash.

Deputy Garner was standing in the median assisting the occupants of a vehicle involved in a crash when another vehicle lost control, entered the median, and struck Deputy Garner. 

ODMP reported that Deputy Garner was transported to St. Mary’s Sacred Heart where he died from his injuries. 

“Deputy Garner was a special kind of person. He was a team player. He always wanted to help his other folks, but he loved working traffic. That’s what he was doing. He was out there responding to help the people in the wreck.”

Deputy Garner had been a Franklin County Deputy for just one year, but had served with several other police departments since 1998.

Deputy Garner is survived by his wife, parents, and brother
