STEVENSVILLE, MD – A Maryland State Fire Marshal saved the life of a man who cut himself during a tree trimming accident and was bleeding profusely.

Senior Deputy State Fire Marshal Brad Childress was about to go off duty when he pulled into his driveway and heard frantic screams for help. Deputy Childress, who is also a Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technition for the United Communities Volunteer Fire Department, pulled back out of his driveway and began to search for the person in need.

Deputy Childress located the man, in a nearby backyard, who had severed his hand and had a deep laceration to his chest. Deputy Childress called for help on his radio and then used his department issued tourniquet to stop the man’s profuse bleeding. Deputy Childress also treated the chest wound until the paramedics arrived.

The man was transported to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Paramedics advised that Deputy Childress’s actions saved the life of the man.

“Childress’ professional demeanor and dedication to duty is a credit not only to himself but to all of the members of the Department of State Police,” stated State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci. “His actions have demonstrated that he is truly an asset to this department and the entire community.”

Thank you for your service Deputy Childress. You are a true hero.
