HENDERSON COUNTY, NC – A Henderson County Deputy Sheriff was shot and killed today as he responded to a burglary call where the suspects had fired at the victim.
Deputy Ryan Hendrix responded to a call of vehicle burglars that had broken into a car and when confronted by the victims, fired shots at them.
Upon arrival Deputy Hendrix located the suspects and they initially complied with orders to raise their hands. Suddenly one of the suspects grabbed a gun and shot Deputy Hendrix in the face.
Two other deputies were able to return fire and the suspect died on the scene. The second suspect was taken into custody. The suspect, who shot Deputy Hendrix, was a career criminal and had a warrant for his arrest for escape.
Deputy Hendrix was rushed to Mission Hospital where he was declared brain dead. Since, he was an organ donor, Deputy Hendrix’s family chose to declare him medically deceased so his organs could be donated to others. Even after making the ultimate sacrifice, Deputy Hendrix will continue to help others for a lifetime.
Deputy Hendrix served as a deputy sheriff for 8 years and prior to entering law enforcement, he was a United States Marine. Deputy Hendrix leaves behind a 9-year-old daughter, a 6-year-old son, and a fiancee who he was going to marry in October.
