Phenix City, AL – Phenix City Assistant Police Chief Gail Green-Gilliam passed away Wednesday evening in the hospital while being treated for COVID-19.
Chief Green-Gilliam had served the residents of Phenix City for 33 years and rose through the ranks within the police department.
Phenix City Police Chief Ray Smith told WLTZ that, “Gail’s spirit quickly reminded me of lessons of duty and loyalty. These are the qualities of Gail’s essence and legacy.”
Phenix City Manager Wallace Hunter said, “No matter what problems we’ve had, if we couldn’t handle those problems, you could send Gail to handle those problems. We’ve lost our bridge over trouble waters.”
WTVM 9 reported that Gail’s husband Eddie Gilliam was devastated by his loss. “She worked hard and became assistant chief,” said Gilliam.
ODMP wrote that Chief Green-Gilliam is survived by her husband, son, two daughters, grandchildren, and siblings. She had also been the foster parent for special needs children and adults.
Chief Green-Gilliam, thank you for your service, you are a true hero.
